Welcome

I’m Dumitru Erhan, a 27-year old Moldovan/semi-Canadian who lives in the great city of Montréal, Québec, Canada. I bike, I cook, I'm a bit of a foodie, "I'm a Mac" and I am an aspiring scientist.

Work

I'm a PhD student at University of Montréal, doing research in the LISA laboratory of Yoshua Bengio. My work is mostly in the emerging field of deep architectures. Most of my days are spent in the LISA lab, where I also (co-)organize the UdeM-McGill-MITACS seminars.

News

  • 05 Jan 2010  —  New paper: "Why Does Unsupervised Pre-training Help Deep Learning?" (JMLR). Grab it while it's hot.
  • 01 Jan 2010  —  I'm the TA for the course IFT6266 at University of Montreal. This year, it's all about deep learning and the goal is to have a common project for large-scale learning and classification of handwritten characters.
  • 09 Jun 2009  —  We've organized the work on deep architectures in our lab so that it has its own category in our publications database. So far, we've produced 26 papers, tech reports and theses on the subject. Enjoy!
  • 06 Jun 2009  —  New tech report on how to visualize higher layers of a deep network. I will present this work at this year's ICML Workshop on Learning Feature Hierarchies.
  • 15 May 2009  —  Student volunteer at ICML 2009, held in Montréal this year. I was also a reviewer for the same conference.
